I'm on the digest, so you may have gotten the thing running by now.
Sure seems like an ignition problem to me. I'd say replace (or file)
the points and get a new condenser.
If that doesn't work, and if it has been running in the past, only three
things can be to blame for it not running now. Lack of:
1. Spark
2. Fuel
3. Compression
Since you checked #2 by using Ether, looks like #1 is the likely convict.
Also (totally unrelated). When my Thermodynamics instructor asked if any
of us knew the cycles of a 4 stroke Otto engine, I replied in true greasy
mechanic fashion, " Suck - Squeeze - Bang - Blow ". Of course.
