I remember a friend having a new TR-7 convertible (1980 model, I think) that suffered drive shaft failure sounding similar to your experience with about 3000 miles on the clock. Since the car was under warranty, the dealer (Carlo Noce in Vestal, NY) just had it welded and that was that. The car got traded on a TR-8 so I have no idea how long the repair lasted.
