I've been asked to summarize the TR2 restoration article that appeared
the the TRF newsletter. Here goes.
The crux of the story is a TR2 restoration that started with a hulk
of a TR2 in the very early seventies and ended 20 years later with a
beautifully restored car. The car was bought by a father whose health
and dearth of skills led him to depend on his son to do the work
while he chased down parts from the sources that were available before
people like TRF and Victoria British (and BMH) came along.
The work progressed very slowly with the father gently prodding
the son into working on the car. It eventually turned into a real
family project as the son's wife got involved and did much of the cars
interior. As time went by the father's health slowly deteriorated and
lent a certain air of urgency to the son's work, in spite of the
fact they had a new baby, home, etc.
The car was eventually finished. Black with a red interior, and
the family took it to a park for a photo session with the now quite
fragile father. They allowed him to drive it there, although there
was a certain amount of risk involved in this owing to the old man's
condition. The picture published in the article showed a rear 3/4
view of the car with the old man in the drivers seat, his entire
face curved upward in a smile. Very expressive. The father, of course,
died shortly thereafter, and the article ends with the son, and his
son, taking the car for a stroll in the park where the photos were
taken.
A very well written and poignant piece.
