As the former owner of a 77 B, I can tell you what my solution was. The last
top brace loaction is critical to the top, and how it looks. That brace
really needs to stay at the seam in the top. I did this by sewing a series
of velcro strips to either side of the seam. This in effect made the tube
you spoke of. However, the velcro allows one to pull the top away from the
frame when in its normal (down :-) position. I found I could more easily
stow the top, and save the rear window by undoing the velcro. As with all
things, YMMV.
