This will probably discourage you more than help, BUT.....way back in about
'60 - '63 my Morris Minor burned #3 exhaust valve. Every 10,000 miles. I
owned it for a bit over 100,000 miles. #3 was the only valve that ever went!
The V shaped burn is quite normal. A small opening occurs between the valve
and the seat and the hot gasses blow out, fire eroding the valve, because the
valve is the hottest part of that system. Once the gasses start to blow past
the valve, it is gone in very few miles. We had the Inskip tech rep try to
figure out the problem. He never did. My guess was a faulty head
casting in the vicinity that allowed greater heating of that valve. But I
can't see how that applies two different heads on a different block.
My solution? Get real good a quick valve jobs. During lunch hour at work I
could have the block drained, the head off, the old valve out, a new valve in
place and lapped in and the head back on. After work I would finish hooking
up the manifolds, refill fluids and drive home.
