Well, we got the seal on the crankshaft pulley, and the whole mess put back
on the car (to be redone next week, when the chain comes in). Here are
some more novice questions for the list:

1) Temperature. Are there different senders for different years? I have
the Jaeger gages (not the Smith). The needle goes right under the red zone
and stays there. If I turn off the engine, the needle will go into the
red zone (as the engine heats the coolant but it is not pumped and the fan
is not running). The old sender died just recently. Before it died it
indicated wonderful temperatures (1/2 scale) for a week or so. The new
sender acts just like the old one did before it started dying. We have
back-flushed the cooling system and replaced the leaky water pump, and
replaced the thermostat with a summer version. The thermostat does kick
in and the coolant can be seen to circulate by looking in the radiator fill
hole. The filler cap is a 7 lb. version. The thing never steams or
boils over, however:

2) I have trouble getting a consistant mixture. When the car is run for
a while, the lifting pin test seems to suggest a leaner and leaner setting.
Then later I have to richen everything to prevent surging. I am going back
and forth about 10 flats on both carbs. Is this due to heat (the ambient
temperature is about the same during all this). When it runs, it runs
great (but I get a puff of black/grey smoke after sitting at a traffic light).

(oh, on number 1 above I have tried a different Jaeger gage. It reads
exactly the same from the new sender).

3) I have a catalog here from Specialty Car Parts. They seem to include
engine numbers on some parts (unlike my local parts dealer, who never asks).
I am sick of paying double and getting the wrong thing. Are these guys
reputable?

Thanks again!
