As an interesting addendum to the discussion on the merits
and flammability of magnesium wheels, I read (tonight) in
the book "Automobile Designers: Twelve Great Designers and
Their Work," that Gabriel Voisin 'accidentally' discovered
that he could use 8:1 compression (instead of 5.5:1) without
spontaneous ignition due to an error in the size of a set of
experimental magnesium pistons. (1923)
The LBC designers who have chapters in this book
(mini-biographies, really) are Frederick Lanchester, Alec
Issigonis, and Colin Chapman. A nice book, with just enough
technical description to teach me something. (And a few nice
pictures, like one of Timo Makinen getting "big air" with a
mini 8-o )
I received my recall seatbelts (for TR7) from Jaguar this
week and I must say, the BRG packing tape is a nice touch.
How do I measure the runout on my brake discs? (Without
breaking into a garage and stealing tools)
