but there seems to be that free wheeling (no compression when you
let off the gas, like 50's American overdrives) that starts 15 or so
        minutes after I start driving.

Did you understand my description a couple of days ago of what a
slipping clutch can do? I'd be suspicious of that first, and that may
just be a question of not enough oil.

The GT6 is notorious for this sort of slippage, because the OD is in a
place where it gets quite warm (Triumph, in their infinite wisdom,
routed the stock exhaust pipe so that it crosses under the gearbox not
once, but twice). Keeping the oil level topped up is a big help.
Directing extra cool air at the box can be a permanent "fix".

Given the way the OD is attached to the gearbox, I'd be willing to bet
that you won't be able to get it loose without the tranny on the bench.
But I could be wrong.

If you want to bring the car by for me to take a ride, I'll be happy to do so.

I'm hearing a wherring sound that I think is in the OD,

Yah, so? There's nothing but whirring parts in there - a little noise is to be
expected!
