In my previous life, I worked at a place that takes British cars apart
and sells the pieces. I got to see all of the awful things that happen
to the British cars that were exported to the U.S. in the post-WWII
period. From that perspective (for what it's worth), my preferences
are as follows
Best sports car: None. They all sucked in one way or another. Only
because there were no alternatives did anyone put up with them. Aside
from the strikingly attractive styling of some of them, they were sorry
excuses for transportation.
Tolerable sports cars: E-types from the middle years, 70-72 MGBs, maybe
TR6's. Bu t,each of these cars was notoriously unreliable,
cramped
on the inside, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and wet in the rain.
Best Saloon: I am tempted to say something nice about Jaguars. I kind of
liked the earliest XJ's, and 420gs/whatever the similar model was called
are endearing in a way, but in the end these cars were just too unreliable
and prone to falling apart. My vote goes to, believe it or not, the late
1960s Ford Cortinas. You laugh. Well, they were ugly and slow and all that,
but they were good cars. (except for the automatics) They drive train was
bulletproof, and the rest of the car was far above the standards of BMC/Leland
etc. as well as the independents.
The opposite end of the spectrum? Well, Jensen Healeys ranked up there, but
the prize for the worst piece of sh*t British car must be awarded to the '
Triumph Spitfire. Any year, but especially the late models. Wierdest U.S.
import in my book was the Sunbeam Imp.
O.K. Flame away.
