Hi all,
As a fledgeling SOL, this is my first posting, so please forgive and
correct any breaches of netiquette.
Having reached the decision that I had way too much free time on my
hands, I recently purchased a "was running when I put it in storage 3 years
ago" 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 MK I (BT7) and am having it shipped to its
new home in North Carolina from North Dakota. It has been in closed, un-
heated storage in ND. The PO took the battery out before storing it, but
besides that it was not prepared for storage.
My question is, basically, what preparation should I perform before
attempting to fire it up?
I have heard that one should drain the gas tank and blow out the fuel line,
squirt some lubricant into the spark plug holes (is WD40 OK?), and hand-crank
it a few times before attempting to fire it up. Any other suggestions?
If, by some chance I actually get this thing running, the next step will
be to replace the tires. A local british mechanic told me "modern
radials don't look right on Big Healeys." Is this true, or is he being
overly picky? He recommended Avon tires (which he would be happy to order
for me 8')
Also, the mechanic indicated that the piston rings may have lost their
springiness after sitting so long in one position, and may therefore not
seal well and/or wear out relatively quickly. Is this true?
Thanks in advance!
