I have found that, as you would expect, heavier viscosity oils
can cut down on oil consumption some. My '66 cad used about 4+
quarts of 10W/40 per 1K miles(!!) primarily due to neglect in
a past life. I switched to straight 50W (valvoline "racing"
oil) and dropped my oil consuption by over a quart. However
I found that it would take in excess of 6 seconds for the oil
pressure light to go off when I first started the car on a cold
morning so I have to switch back. I would vote for the overhaul
except for that wife thing. You may be happiest if you sell.
