Well this doesn't have much LBC content but Scott Paisley's account of his
TR6 tuning reminds me of my corolla (1978 1166 ohv dual throat). With the
colour tune in cylinder 1 (cyliner 2 is identical) I notices a lean condition.
So I tried enriching the mixture no effect. I disassembled, soaked, blew and
reassembled the carb twice with no effect.

The flame colour is erratic. Most of the time it's pale blue. Frequently I
get flickers of yellow or no flame at all. The no flame is accompanied by
a stumble in the engine. At one stage the plug sparked continually with no
flame until the engine died. The stumble is easily detectable by the
movement of the block and the rattle of the harmonic balance (which has
a very worn key slot - about 15deg). Plugs, leads, points, condensor,
cap have been replace. Dwell is a good 52. Fuel pump reads 4mmHg output
pressure (which is good, 2.8-4.3) and 11.5mmHg input vacuum. Manifold
vacuum at idle is about 16mmHg (a touch low) compression pressures are fairly
even and about 140psi dry and 170psi wet (spec is 150psi but the engine may
be the older type which is 170psi).

Timing was good before the harmonic balancer went (caused by overloading the
car and going up hills at 5500rpm in 2nd). If you blip the throttle quickly
you can induce the no flame condition flowed by a very rich mixture on
the recovery bursts. This condition what happening before the harmonic
balancer incident. Also the car seems to run smoother when it's cold (once
you get it to idle).

I'm at a loss as to the problem. Could it be the same as what Scott
mentioned? How do I determine this? Any pointers much appreciated.

The good thing about this is that I've been able to drive the Rover SD1 more.
It's great to be in a car that sticks and goes strongly. The bad side is
that because I drive it I can't fix it. And those Strombergs are slowly
going out of tune. Forturnately the SUs are very quickly getting rebuilt.
