My friend Tim has a question about his newly-purchased 1972 MGB-GT with
overdrive. The PO, a mechanic, had the car for two years. We don't know
how much he drive it. He told Tim to always be sure to depress the clutch
when engaging overdrive. Tim now has a manual, which says unequivocally
that one SHOULD NOT depress the clutch when engaging overdrive.
I don't know what, if anything, either the PO or the manual has to say
about using the clutch when DISengaging OD.
Tim's question for the group is: What harm, if any, might the previous
owner have done by depressing the clutch when engaging OD? Why does the
manual say it should not be done?
I myself would like to know how the MG overdrive differs from the
US overdrives I remember from the 50's? (I of course wasn't old enough to
drive in the 50's (funny, my nose is lengthening)) but the cars were still
around.
