Ken:
You may not remember this, but you were the one who told me about
the britishcar list some 5 years ago or so :-) (Thanks :-)
Anyway, on to your question... I've got a fuel injected
TR8 and I've just recently played around with an 80 FI TR7 Spider
(California car). The fuel injection on the TR7 is completely
Bosch, through and through (even the computer). That means
(in spite of people bad-mouthing Bosch :-) that it's quite
reliable and parts are easy to find should the need ever arise.
Even the computer is still available. The TR8, on the other hand,
has a LUCAS fuel injection computer which is (1) prone to break,
(2) available for outrageous sums of money, and (3) not Bosch.
For the record, nothing Bosch on the TR8 has broken but lots
of Lucas stuff has... :-) :-) Hmmmmm... actually I *DO*
remember replacing one of those relays with a Ford unit... :-)
I digress.
All 1980 California TR7's and TR8's were fuel injected. For 1981
all TR8s were fuel injected and I assume all TR7s were too.
I doubt you'll have trouble with the fuel injection. You MAY
however, have trouble with the REST of the engine :-(
For the record, there's a guy in town who owns a sort-of shop
that sells cars on consignment. He found an 80 TR7 Spider edition
with fuel injection (kinda rare car). I helped him out with as
much of the fuel injection stuff as I could. Well, he was just
getting close when he found out the air flow meter (it's Bosch
L-Jetronic) was for a VW and not a TR7. He ripped off all the
FI and put on carbs. ACKKKKKKK! If anyone wants TR7 fuel injection
parts, write me quick before they disappear. I hate it when that
happens :-o
