Hi,

I might add that if you do-it-yourself repair the starter, don't forget to soak
the OILITE bushings in oil prior to assembly! They'll last a lot longer than if
you don't ;-).

Seriously, you are supposed to soak 'em for 24 hours or so prior to assembly.

p.s. If your starter wires are getting hot enough to smell or smoke, you really
should check to make sure you have no open or shorted windings. Quite commonly
the (bushing) bearing failure causes binding which causes a LOT of heat which
can cause winding failure! This is one instance where preventative maintenance
will pay off (new starters are pretty expensive!) Replacing the bushings can
make your starter very happy.
