You should also check the tightness of the low tension wire between
the points and the coil. There is a push-on connector on the distributor
itself which should be nice and tight. Also *inspect* any splices. I got
bitten when my MGB's PO twisted a couple of wires together without soldering
them. The copper oxidizes and the connection goes flakey under vibration.
As previously suggested, the fuel pump is another suspect. You can
test it by getting out onto a lightly travelled road. Push the loud pedal
hard until it really starts to sputter, then *cut the ignition* and roll to
the side of the road. Using your trusty screwdriver, open the float bowls
on the carbs. If they are full of gas, the fuel pump is not at fault. If
they're empty, limp back home and put in a facet (also sold under Purolator)
fuel pump.
