Wayne recently writing about his mini model sparked a
memory; When I was about 8, the big posh toy store in
old downtown (Stockton, Ca.) was Pardini's, and they
had a fairly large display of Corgi model cars. One day
with nose pressed up to the glass case, I spied
something odd amongst the recognizable Ferraris,
Lamborghinis. When I asked my older brother what this
was, he said "Mini", and when on about how they were
giant killers, etc. I made my mind up right then &
there that I wanted that model now, and a real one
later. But $2 was the price tag, & that was a long way
off then.
Twenty years fogged the memory, but somehow the
little Mini became mine within a few weeks. White with
black doors, boot & bonnet (that all open), it had tiny
jewelled headlights and a red interior with seats that
actually folded forwards. This was my pride & joy, my
favorite possession, and my first in what was to become
quite a few Corgi cars.
I still have the Mini, a little dinged up, but the
headlights still sparkle & the bonnet still opens. And
until I can have the real thing, it'll do just fine.
cheers-
