Having grown up within a couple o' stones throws from scotty, I'd always
thought the proper pronunciation of Jaguar was "jig-uh-wire", as in
"That's a mighty fine jig-uh-wire you got there" as commented by five guys
hanging out in front of a liquor store late one evening as I got into my
Austin-Healy Sprite (which seems to be pronounced all-tin squealy
spridget). Seriously, if you are really curious about the development of
the English language, I suggest a very well written book titled "The Story
of English" by Robert McCrum published in 1986 by Viking Press.
