I'm planning a (hopefully) minor repair session on my Datsun 2000 roadster,
and I have a couple of questions. The items to be repaired are a rusted
through kick panel and front end of sill. I propose to remove the rusted
metal in both places and patch the kick panel with fiberglass. I don't
know what I'm going to do with the sill yet, but I'll at least make sure
that water can't get into it anymore. At the same time I will paint the
insides of the fenders (still in factory primer after being installed new
before I bought the car.) So:
I want to treat the inside of the sill to prevent further rust. Water has
gotten in, so there is undoubtedly surface rust inside, but it's not rusted
through (and I want it to stay that way.) Is Waxoyl or equivalent the proper
item, and if so, where can I get some? It needs to be a spray-on treatment,
since the inside of the sill is not accessible otherwise.
What is the best paint for the fenders? I'm ruling out undercoating, because
it is messy and can trap water, and the car is not driven heavily or in
snow. Would there be any advantage to using Hammerite over ordinary acylic
enamel? I'd like something with good chip resistance, and it can have all
winter to dry/cure.
Finally, what is the best primer and paint system for the repaired rusty
areas? In this case, I'm looking for a brushable system which doesn't
mind being used over rust. Eastwood has some rusty metal primer, is it
substantially better than what I might find at the local auto body supply?
Thanks for the help.
