It really isn't necessarily "us" who are organizationally impaired. It's all
very well to sit back in my comfy chair and say, "Yes, well, I'll need a
new gasket, a hone, a Whitworth spanner, and 2 quarts of oil", and indeed
if all went well that would be exactly what I needed. However, there's
always a stud that strips, or a ring that looks worn, or a lamp mounting
bracket that has weakened, and once the cruft has been cleared away to the
point where you can deal with the unexpected stuff, you are sure to notice
10 more things that you "might as well do now while the cover's off"...
and 3 or 5 separate calls to your favorite parts suppliers is an entirely
sensible thing to do. Being able to say "yes, just call them and order what
you know you need now", without having to worry about getting hosed down
on shipping charges, is a very positive point in favor of any supplier.
There are several suppliers of parts for air-cooled VW's that are a joy
to work with in this regard: some of them will even help you a bit, along
the lines of "Oh, well, if you're changing the framus, the thingamajig will be
easy to replace and often needs to be. Would you like one of those too?"
Now that's the kind of service that makes me want to call back again next time.
