Bob Jones writes about the saga with a poor running MGB:

Would hazard a guess that it may still be your distributor.
1 - Are the weigths okay ?
2 - Are the springs holding the wwieghts okay ?
3 - With timing light attached does the timing mark advance when you suddenly
open the throttle ? (I assume your vacuum advance is disconnected on the
    Weber)
4 - After the throttle closes, does the timing go back to its initial setting ?

- Do you have an inlet manifold leak (backfiring usually indicates a
  lean mixture) ?
- Are the throttle plates on the Weber closing or sticking ?
