acg tells of the Fag Paper test:

Which brings to mind an old friend who was a heavy smoker,
and therefore always had matchbooks in his pocket. He used
to use the cover of the matchbook to set the points in his
cars (first demonstrated on his '6?  MGB - whatever the first
 year was).  He claimed that matchbook covers were a consistent
15 thou - close enough for his points anyway.
