Folks-

At the risk of exposing myself as ...

>>> just an airheaded dweeb who talks a lot <<<

as described by MJB in his message of Mon, 1 Jun 92 16:44:27 -0600
entitled "Stats" ....

Talking about the Jensen GT's gearbox,
pwcs.StPaul.GOV!phile@medtron.medtronic.COM (Philip J Ethier) sez ...

>>> If Getreibe means Gearbox, does reibe mean box?<<<

Nah, I think "getreibe" is more "gear" than "gearbox" ... my handy-
dandy AIT book gives the following

Transmission Kraftuebertragung
Gearchange Getreibewechsel
Pinion Getreiberad

"Gear" in the sense of "speed" is "gang" ... a "5-speed" is a "fuenf-
ganger"

My Cassell's German-to-English defines "Getreibe" as "machinery, gear,
drive" but also mentions "das Getreibe der Welt" as "the bustle of
life."

I can't find my English-to-German, so the only way I can give you "box"
in German is to go English-to-Danish-to-German, and since the result is
untrustworthy at best (and obscene at worst) I'll let someone who knows
what they are talking about fill you in on that.

>>> Nelson Yaple has the same engine [as the Jensen GT] in his Lotus
Elite, and I am quite sure he described its gearbox as a BMW unit.<<<

Yep, that's when I did the original research on which gearbox came in
which small BMW.

Then tlp30@duts.ccc.amdahl.com (Tim Pettenati) weighs in with ...

>>> I made a slight mistake on my last post to the British Cars List.<<<

I get the digest so I haven't seen it yet, anyway.

The first-is-left-and-back pattern is typical of the close-ratio
gearboxes with direct top gears; I've seen it on both 5-speed 2002 and
"sports" 5-and-6-series BMWs (the big BMWs get similar gearboxes to
the littleones, but they are scaled-up a bit.

>>> Like I said, I don't think BMW used this gearbox in any US imports.
I've heard it made be in an European 2002 Tii 5-speed, but I really
don't know.<<<

That's what I've been told, too. The cars didn't make it over here via
the regular import channels but some of the gearboxes are floating
around over here none-the-less.

>>> If a normal pattern 5 speed would bolt up, that would be nice to
know.<<<

My informant says they will, but he may be thinking of BMW engines, and
the BMW bellhousings ... certainly, all the gearbox/BMW-bellhousing
combinations will fit the BMW motor, though whether all the gearboxes
will fit the same bellhousing, I dunno.

>>> I do have both a 4-speed and 5-speed gearbox sitting in my garage.
The bellhousing and driveshafts used are also different.<<<

Right, and the shift towers are, too.

Some excerpts on my message about this back when we were discussing the
same (or similar) setup in Nelson Yaple's car ...

The book says the 2002 Tii came standard with a Getrag 4-speed,
with a ZF 5-speed optional.

Neither the [2002] Touring [car] nor the ZF 5-speed was normally
imported to the USA, though some of the transmissions have made it over,
and probably a few of the cars, too.

I called my BMW guy (Ken at Bowman Motor Works, 404-237-1001), since I
don't know that much about the 4-cylinder cars, and he had this to say
about 2002 transmissions:

(1) All 4-speed "Getrag" (i.e. from Getriebe A.G.) trannies for 4-
cylinder BMWs are the basically the same, physically. All the 5-speeds
are basically the same, physically, too, though diffo from the 4-
speeds.

(2) He didn't know of anything special about the 2002 Tii [Touring or
not] 4-speed 'box versus the 2002 Ti or normal 2002.

(3) The 4-speed 'box from the 320i is the same as the 4-speed in the
2002 except for the location of the clutch slave cylinder. It has
different ratios, too, though I don't know in what direction (wider,
closer) they differ.

(4) A 5-speed 'box (either from a 2002 or from a 320i) will bolt
right into the same place the 4-speed 'box went, but they are
physically longer so they require that you shorten the driveshaft and
shift tower about 3.125". The slave cylinder might be in a different
place, though, depending on which 4-speed you're replacing with which 5-
speed. A driveshaft shop can shorten the driveshaft, and Ken said the
shift tower was "a simple welding job, we do them all the time for guys
putting 320i 5-speeds in hotted-up 2002s." He also said the 5-speed
2002 shift tower is a standard BMW _European_ part and can be ordered
through a BMW parts specialist.

Of course, you probably don't have the same shift tower anyway ....

My understanding is that all the 4-speeds have a 1:1 top gear, but that
the 5-speeds came in two major versions, one with a direct 4th and
overdrive 5th (the regular version) and a close-ratio "sports" job with
a direct 5th. According to Ken, the 5-speed 'box in the 2002 was the
close-ratio, direct 5th unit, and the one in the 320i is the normal,
direct 4th, one.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
