As a part of the restoration I have been doing on my 77 MGB,
I installed my windshield with new seals to the body and new
pillar seals. I had a very difficult time getting the windshield
pillar bolts to line up. I had the dash board out and had the whole
family (wife and teen-age son quality time?) press down on the
side of the pillar in an attempt to compress the seal enough to
start the bolts. After about 5 hours and much frustration, I
decided to tighten the bolts around the center rod (I didn't
torque them too much). I realize this was dangerous, but I could
not think of any other way to compress the seal. By the way, I
had the windshield on and off the car at least ten times trying
to adjust and trim excess rubber (the seals came from Rover). To
make a long story shorter, the center bolt tightening
worked. I am wondering if others have had as much problem as
I had. I am also having problems with the pillar seals. My door
vent windows are in a bind when trying to shut the door. I have
tried applying liquid soap and graphite material in an attempt to
help the window vent slide onto the seal easier. This has helped
some, but there is still a bind. I have modified the seal
by slicing the rubber on the inside so the seal compresses more.
Again this helped, but not enough. If the old seals were in
decent shape, I would have put them back on, but they basically
fell apart when I removed them. I have also adjusted
the door a little and no adjustment is possible. Again
any one else experience this situation. Any advise? Thanks in
advance.
