There is indeed a check valve. It is in the oil filter mount
on the side of the engine. You didn't say what type of oil filter you
had, but I would guess that it is one of the "upside down" spin on
types. These incorporate check valves in both the inflow and outflow
side. The idea being to keep the oil from draining out of the filter.

10 seconds is about the right amount of time to charge the
filter if it's empty. If you were filling the entire oil cooler, I can
assure you it will take far longer than 10 seconds.

I would examine the inflow check valve and make sure it's not
stuck slightly open. These are usually ball and spring affairs, but I
havn't dismantled the inverted spin-on type to see.

A cautionary tale: If anyone has a 68 or 69 MGB with the
inverted cartridge filter, REPLACE IT WITH THE LATER (or earlier) UNIT
NOW. These things habitually take 10 seconds to get oil to the engine
after a 10 minutes of idleness. It tears the sh*t out of bearing
surfaces inside the engine.

in need of a good brew right about now.
