For a beginner, acrylic lacquer is the best choice since it's the most forgiving
if you make a mistake. There are some other more durable paints like the
urethanes (Imron, etc.), but those are best left to a pro. If you haven't done
any painting or prep work for a car before, get some advice from someone who
has, it'll save you a lot of headaches. Runs can be sanded out, but a lot of
fish eyes or improper sanding on the primer are harder to fix. It's very
helpful to have someone to man the tack cloth between coats, if it's someone
with paint experience they can guide you as you go. Good luck.
