Did you replace the rocker shaft and rocker arms at the rebuild?
Did you replace the valves at the rebuild?
Did you replace the cam shaft and tappets?
Were the "holes" in the block where the cam runs (in 1500 the cam runs on the
block, there are no cam bearings) in good shape, ie, were they "hollowed" out.
This is usually only a problem on high mileage engines or where they have
starved of oil.

If the above were worn then you will get noise. The most common problem is
that the valve wears a groove in the rocker arm so you can't adjust it
properly as by using a feeler gauge the surfaces must be flat. To get round
this
you can get a Valve clearence adjuster which uses a verier scale unscrew the
screw to get the required gap.
If the arm surfaces are flat it could be a worn or badly machined cam lobe
or bad tappet. You can measure the lift of each cam lobe at certain degrees
of engine rotation with a good dial gauge to see if the cam is off.

You should retourque the head down when resetting the valve gaps. Are you
doing them cold or with a hot engine

/??? I'm not sure which is correct, all the books say COLD, but John Twist
who writes for MG enthusiast said do them HOT in a letter a while back in the
mag.

Good luck. DW
