Hi Ho everyone! This is kinda long, but I chopped it up for easier
reading.
About my car:
I'm the guy with the newly acquired '75 TR6. I had originally posted
that it was a '76, buy I was wrong, it's a '75. Anyway, I hadn't
received the car as of my first mailing but I've had it for a few
days now, and know more about the car. Anyway, I bought the car from
a guy in Laurel, Maryland who does nothing but restore TR6's. Well
actually he's a school teacher with summers off (what a life eh?) and
with his extra time he works on TR6's. His name is Mel Burwell.
Anyone know of him? Usually he builds the cars to the requesters
specs. Color, Overdrive, Automatic trans (yes he will put a TR250
automatic in a TR6 if you insist) whatever. This particular car was
to go to a navy captain, but he got transferred to Guam, thus the open
market sale. This particular car had all the fenders and body off,
sand blasted, primed, painted, & undercoated. Not a spec of rust to
be found anywhere on the car! A rare thing for a LBC indeed...The
interior needs some TLC, and the engine and drive train have 72,000
miles. The car doesn't have overdrive but I would like that someday.
How much labor and parts would that take? (This obviously is a down
the road kinda thing to be done...)
The Clutch:
Thanks to all the replies about my clutch question. As it turns out,
I think that the clutch is just fine. My concern about the stiffness
of the clutch was relieved by an article that I read in R&T which said
"even Arnold Swartzinegers (misspelled) left leg would get tired
driving in traffic in a TR6." I guess I'm going to have to work out
at the gym with my right leg so that I don't walk funny. :-) The
clutch grabbing low on the peddle is a function of newness of the
clutch, I'm told. Mel said that the clutch was replaced less than 3
months ago, so I'm not overly concerned about that, as I don't think
the car was driven much since the clutch replacement. It does lock up
real nice. Time will tell.
Oil:
So what type of oil do you LBC owners use out there? (oh great,
another controversial issue...) Right now, I'm using Castrol 20W-50,
and I'll probably run 10-40 later this year. Anyone running Mobile 1?
I called their R&D 800 number, and asked if there was a problem using
Moble 1 in an "older" engine. They assured me that the oil wouldn't
be any problem whatsoever. I'm still not sure it's worth $4 a quart!
Carbs:
Man this car is running rich! So, I found that I need a special tool
to adjust the carbs! Ack! If anyone has any old articles about carb
tuning, I'd love to have em, as I'm about to embark on a long journey
me thinks, and I'll take any help I can get! I feel it is running
rich as the plugs are real black and covered with soot. No oil
though... (yay!) There is soot in the exhaust too. So what kind of
oil to you all use in the carbs? I've seen people use marvel mystery
oil, but nothing else.
Covers:
So uh, anyone got a used car cover forsale? :-) I saw a real nice
cover from Moss for $139, but that seems pricey. Does anyone know of
a real good cover for not so much bucks?
Parts:
So what are the best places to get LBC parts? I know of Moss and The
roadster factory, but those are the only ones I know about. Can
someone forward a list of places?
