I'm really glad to hear that the Huffaker name is still associated with
Britishcars, some time back I heard that they (father and son) were building
rice-burners!!! Back in the 1970's we pitted next to them at several SCCA
Regionals and the Phoenix Nat. What a great bunch!! They had Great cars,
super-pro crews, and not at all snooty. At the time we were racing
"Great Pumkin Jr." a BRIGHT ORANGE TR-4, and I was trying to make a living
as a sports Photographer. At least once, Lil' Joe came over and offered free,
advice, showing us what a non-wobbling dist. shaft will do for lap times!!
I had nearly open access to the Huffaker pit area, except for a few Secret
Go Fast parts on the V12 and the Jensen :-).. My best memory is of the two Joes
at the Phoenix National, after winning B-Prod, D-Prod, and E-Prod, huge silly
grins, shirts unbuttoned, and beers in the right hands....
Those were really Great Times, 25hr non-stop tows to No. Cal, using the
parking bumper at the Phoenix Downtown Hyatt parking lot at 9pm as an
anvil to straighten the front valence...Changing the #4 sleeve & piston
in a Dennys parking lot.
(Now if someone would just buy the MGA coupe, I could get the MGA MkII ready
for vintage racing...)
BTW:
I have many photos from the 1975-1980 period, including all the Huffaker
Cars V-12 Jag, Jesen-Healey, MGB, and many other SCCA type cars from that
period. Most were taken at PIR (P=Phoenix) or at local Hill-Climbs. If any-
one is interested, I'd allow some of them to be "GIF'ed", and released to
the Public Domain....(alt.sex.pictures-of-old-sports-cars???). Catch? I
don't have access to any colour scanners...
"Tucson, what a great place for mad dogs and Englishmen;
354 days of sunshine a year...."
