Of course, there's another method besides a real tie rod puller and the
dreaded pickle fork (there's ALWAYS another method :-) -- the
two-hammer method. Take two hammers, preferably of the same weight or
close, and hammer on the two parts. One hammer up, one hammer down. It
may take 30 blows, but it will work eventually.
To avoid mushrooming the end of the threads, loosen the nut to past the
end of the threaded part, but don't remove it. Then you're hitting the
nut, not the thread.
But really, you should buy a tie rod puller. They're wonderful.
