Well, I've been "always the bridesmaid and never the bride" on jury
service so far. I've made into courtrooms twice, but one case was
settled and my services weren't required on the other. At least I'm
getting to catch up on my back issues of "Home and Garden". :-)
I've put together a part list for the rebuild, which I'm appending to
this note after a ^L. It's rather long, so unless you have some
direct interest, you might want to skip it. I've priced the parts at
both Victoria British and The Roadster Factory; I'll probably be
buying the bulk of the parts from TRF. If I get enough energy,
perhaps I'll price Moss Motors as well. For no particular reason, I
don't like to purchase from them. (Also, I don't have a current
price list.)
Some of the parts on the list are marked with (?) to indicate that I'm
not sure whether I'll need them or not. Any advice on these parts
will be appreciated. There's also a section on possible upgrades,
primarily a heavy-duty clutch set. I'm leaning towards getting that,
unless the clutch feel will be annoyingly stiff or difficult to use.
Any comments?
Next step in the rebuilding process is to find another ride while the
MGB is laid up. (It's my daily commuter, has been for 2.5 years.)
I'm kicking myself for not buying the $750 Midget I saw some time ago.
Oh well.
Here's another general question about rebuilding: What is the
"proper" lubrication during the rebuild? I recall vaguely hearing
that things like the cam, various bearings and so on should be
lubricated during reassembly. True? If so, what type of lubricant,
and any hints? What's done to get oil in the passages before firing
up the engine - turning the engine over by hand? Also, along the same
lines, what's the feeling about gasket sealant, loc-tite (recently
discussed re: connecting rod bolts) and other such marvels of modern
chemistry?
Thanks to Roger for the pointer to "Weekend Rebuilder". As it
happened, the latest Classic Motorbooks catalog showed up the same
day, and I ordered the book that evening. I like Classic Motorbooks,
but their stocking policy is annoying. They stock very low levels of
their books, and it is commonplace to find them sold out on many
items. They had "a few copies" of Weekend Rebuilder left, and were
out of another rebuilding book. They're especially bad with sales
stock. I once tried to order eight books from the Christmas catalog
the day I received it, and they were out of all eight. On the flip
side, they are friendly, non-deceptive and service orders reasonably
fast. And they're the only game in town. :-)
Part list follows...
