The problem with timing specs is that they depend on the consitions of
measurement, such as static or dynamic, or whether or not various hoses
are connected.
For example, static timing on my Spitfire is 6 deg BTDC, while
the timing running at idle is 2 deg ATDC. This is because the
vacuum retard mechanism retards timing 8 degrees at idle, and
not at all for all other situations.
Actually there is also a typo in the Haynes AND the Owner's handbook!!!
They specify a static timing of 6 deg ATDC instead of BTDC.
