Since youe engine is that far appart, you might as well go ahead & do a full
rebui

rebuild. Before disassembling the engine though, I would have had another
look at the valve train. A crack in a tappet could cause an extra large gap
while the engine is running. Another culpret could be badly warn tappet to
shaft clearence. Look carefully at all your push rods. If there is a crack
in the cup it will be closed when you adjust the valves but open under operating

pressures & incrase the gap. Roll the pushrods. If one is bent, it will bend
farther under pressure. When I first got my TR3 sorted out & on the road,
I had this noise that sounded like a bearing going out when the car was under
load. I had several knowledgable proffessionals listen & they all concluded
there was a loose rod. Most guesses were small end. I poked about the valve
train & discovered a hairline crack in a cup of a push rod. I replaced
the pushrod & the noise went away.
