>Estimates were that approx. 80% of all Allards still in existance were
>present at Laguna Seca for this event.
I just read in R&T a retrospective about Allard, the article says about
1900 Allards of various models were made. Of course, given the handling
characteristics, I would expect the attrition rate to be very high!
>Class 3A included a 1954 Corvette . . .a '51 Nash-Healet. . .
I talked to the guy with the Nash-Healet last year. It was the first
Nash-Healey I'd seen there. He found the car with a Chevy engine and
asertained that it had been raced that way in the 50's or 60's so that
was how he'd race it. He was just starting to race and was still sorting
the car out. He figured he be in the middle of the pack but would be
grinning all the way.
>All 4 of the Jaguar XKs were DNF!!!!!!!
>One after the other they retired into the pits. One ended up off the
>track & came in after the race. Bad day for Jag fans.
Bad day for many cars, that race. I think at least two more DNF.
>Class 4A had an assortment of cars such as a '52 Aardvark. . .
>did hear the announcer repedidly mention that the Aardvark was passing this
>car or that.
The Aardvark started dead last, by the end of the first lap, it was seventh.
Lap two saw it at 5th. Lap 3 it was in fourth. It passed three more cars
but was unable to catch the leader and finished the race in second.
Very impressive driving.
>Race 5A was mostly V-8 Allard J2s with a '54 Kurtis & a XK-120C thrown in.
There was also a special built by Healey for Briggs Cunningham. A
Silverstone with a Caddy engine. I saw this car a couple of years ago at
the All British Car Meet in Palo Alto, just after it had been aquired
(from the Cunningham Museum, I guess), before it was restored. I think
it would be able to hold it's own.
>Class 6A had
Big bore Sports-Racers from the 50's and early 60's
>The last group that ran on saterday was class 7A.
FIA and CAN-AM.
There was very good racing in these two races until someone got a little
carried away in the heat of competition. A Devin SS smacked the wall
between turns 4 and 5 and a CAN-AM Alfa Romeo (?) got turned around 180
and started sheding body parts right after the Dunlop bridge. For those
following the destruction of cars for movies, its even more painful to
see it live.
