The story of my '70 TR6, back on the road this summer after a major
front-end rebuild, continues.
It's on the road, running much better now. Last time I had it out, I
noticed a funny smell when at stop signs, etc. When I got back, I popped the
bonnet and saw drip...drip...drip from the rear carb. Oops, so that's where
all the fuel was going. I finally got out of my crunch (we shipped 2.0 and
the A3000), so last week I rebuilt both carbs (I bought rebuild kits when I got
the car, on the assumption that any british car always needs carb rebuilding
when bought). New gaskets, new float valves (Gross Jets), and diaphragms.
The rear carb also had a diaphragm with three 1/2" slits in it - not good for
performance, I suspect. Runs much smoother now. I roughly set the idle with
my Unisyn (finally got to use it - it's wonderful). It still needs timing, and
I get a slight miss at idle (probably the timing), but it revs nice and smooth.
Gas mileage seems much improved also.
I also drove it for the first time in the rain, and for the first time
with the rear window zipped down - it's really nice.
It still needs aligning, and I think I need new rear shocks - bumps
cause the left rear to bottom rather sharply. Maybe I'll throw in some
competition springs while I'm at it. Right now it's tail-heavy, with every tool
I own in the trunk (just in case, of course - since I have them there it
won't break down, or if it does it will require some special tool I don't own
anyways. ;-) Even the floor jack is back there.
Still some random trim things to do, and eventually I need to put the
new rockers in, but I'm still concentrating on mechanicals for now. I also
need to replace the strangely worn (due to alignment/damage now repaired)
rubber rocks (Generals) with something a bit stickier. Suggestions? A008?
A008R(tu)? A001R if I can find them? Comp TA? I don't plan to do much auto-
crossing, but I also want good handling and not kill them too soon. Also,
what size (on stock steel rims)?
One more question: how do I know if the brake booster is working?
Given the number of dead pieces of rubber on and in the car, I suspect
anything with rubber in it right now.
