R. Houk indicated he had to lean out the idle-air adj to pass
the Massachusetts emissions test.
If this implies low idle speed - don't do it. One of my cars failed
the hydrocarbon limit and the garage man literally stepped on the gas
pedal for a faster idle and got the emissions into spec. One other
year and a different garage man wanted to again fail my car. when
enquiring as to what needed to be fixed - he didn't know. I assume
he was looking for more work. After explaining about fast idle and
re-trying the test, the car passed with no problem. I suspect this
emissions testing can be a gimmic for more business. None of my cars
will go to test at less than 1000 RPM.
As to a 74 Europa, I doubt that test limits are very demanding as that
was the 1st year of controls on cars.
Testing is not a problem here in Mass., it's the taxes and insurance costs
and speeding fines that get you.
...happy Healeying.
