A couple of relatively reliable sources I have talked to say the change
to ATF was actually reccommended in a BL service bulletin. It seems
there is a cheap little oil pump in the transmission that lubricates
the front bearing that will strip its drive gear if the viscosity is
too high. This is supposedly one major source of failure for these
gear boxes. Of course, the use of synthetic oil may mean that the
viscosity never gets that high in cold weather.
