Didn't someone at one time weld a extension strip around the inside edge of the 
door frame to double the width of the glue seam area? It seems like that would 
give a much better bond to the door skin. It would add a little weight to the 
door. But a wider metal contact area (Even if only done to the roof area.) 
would have to be stronger if it was double the width, perpaired right and 
modern glues were used.   For E-T center caps you can try Whiteys Wheels
