I want to thank the people that responded with suggestions regarding the
problem I was having with the overflow of gas.
All is OK now.
The general consensus is that some dirt got into the carburetor and that
allowed gas to pour into the carburetor and overflow after the car was
shut off.
How I fixed it;
1) l removed the carburetor and took it apart. We couldn't find any
dirt but it might have washed away when I dumped the fuel out.
2) I changed the oil and oil filter.
3) re-Installed the carburetor and installed a new fuel filter at the
input of the carburetor. ( When I installed the new Holley earlier this
spring, I installed the fuel filter at the tank due to a lack of room
between the carburetor and original fuel line. As you all know, the
original ford carburetor has the fuel filter attached, the Holley
requires an inline filter.)
4) Spun the engine over a coupe of times without the coil attached.
5) Then started the car.
6) Problem gone!
Now for the lesson learned.
Earlier this week my car all of a sudden started to stall when I
approached a stop sign. I didn't know what the problem was. As it
turns out, the carburetor was flooding. Next the car was becoming more
and more difficult to start. Again it was flooding. I didn't know
enough about carburetors to recognize the problem or to know that I
should not have been seeing gas running into the carburetor when I was
trying to start it. For those who don't know, you should not see any
gas in the carburetor when the car is idling.
