shock absorbers

Does anyone know how long gas shocks should typically last when the car is 
not driven much?  The KYB shocks gave out after 6 yrs but only a few thousand 
miles.  Is that unusual?  Since I now need new shocks, can anyone recommend 
any better ones?  Thanks.
