FWIW, point gap is a function of voltage at the plug, not how it's
triggered, so the coil voltage, sparkplug wire size/construction, and plug
design is the criteria. If the coil is stock, going to a wider gap won't
improve performance, but can make it worse.

Taking it one step further, you only need enough spark to ignite the charge,
any extra has no bearing on performance beyond prematurely burning out the
plug (since there's not enough mixture to properly cool it) and act as a
slight safety measure if you over rev it.

It's been my experience that when converting to a MSD or other high output
ignition system on a street machine that if there was any improvement it was
due it compensating for other maladies such as ditching a points system, a
worn carb, rings, etc., which isn't quite the same as the marketing hype
would have you believe is the reason.
