Usually brackets are painted, dipped in paint or left bare,at least on Fords,
after being produced. Then during engine assembly they get some over spay on 
them
of the engine color while the engine gets painted. The part you have should give
clues.
I hope that helps a little. The next option is to hunt down an original AMC car
and take a look.
