Tranny Kick Down Rod

Anyone have any ideas on how to adjust the kick down rod on a '75 with the FMX? 
 On mine, just the weight of the rod moves the lever on the trans about 1/2 way 
and the rod interferes with the throttle cable mount. It looks like there 
should be some sort of support or guide holding the middle of the rod.  Is 
there a cable replacement?
