Another thing you might want to consider is getting the rims professionally
polished. Although that may alter the look enough that you might not want
to consider it if you're keeping those rims because of their originality.
Anyhow - I've seen a few cast and forged aluminum items that were "deep
polished", and it's quite incredible, really. The metal almost looks like
it was plated, but the effect is a wee bit "whiter" than chrome. I don't
know if deep polishing is a standard or technical term, but I was talking
with a polisher who said that the key is to polish hard enough and long
enough to bring the metal to a specific temperature range, which actually
helps re-arrange the crystalline structure, resulting in a glassy, shiny
finish.
My forged rims (American Racing XR-LeMans) came polished, and several people
have mistakenly thought that they were plated. Find a polisher and have a
look at some of their samples.
Of course, with the B's wheel design being so intricate, you'll probably be
looking at shelling out lots of dough - it might not be cost-effective
compared to the acid-dip followed by thorough cleaning.
