Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night
Sunday November 5th
RAIN OR SHINE
Here's a quick synopsis of what Bonfire Night is celebrating for those
folks not familiar with it. Bonfire Night is a uniquely British holiday.
It is celebrating the discovery and thwarting of the Gunpowder Plot in
1604. The plotters had smuggled several tons of gunpowder into the
chambers beneath Parliment and were planning to blow it up on the
opening day of Parliment. The King was always in attendence on the
opening day along with leaders of the recently independent Church of
England. The Church of England was established by King Henry the 8th by
splitting away from the Roman Catholic church. The plotters were
disaffected Roman Catholics who felt the schism in the church was
blasphemous. The British have always celebrated this day because it is
felt that this event solidified Britain's independence, both political
and religious and their cultural identity.
