Do they not check the car for check engine codes? I know a burnt out o2
sensor will fail smog, do they check for faults only if the car fails?

Check number one is whether the MIL or CEL lights up when the key is turned
on (to make sure you haven't pulled the bulb), and check number two is that it
goes off when the car is started and stays off during the test. Failure to
come on initially, failure to go off when the engine is started, or failure to
stay off during the test forces the smog tech to abort the test.
