I can see how that could be a problem at a track day, but at
autocross, I think you could grip as tightly as you wanted (though you
shouldn't) without any issues. Either way, I haven't had any such
problems--but maybe that's because I'm not going fast enough. ;-)
I was taught to grip the wheel firmly but not with a "death grip"
which leads to fatigue and also can make the car a bit more "twitchy"
in reaction to surface imperfections. At rally school I was taught not
to hook my thumbs around the wheel, because they could get injured
should one of the front wheels hit something big.
