Rich: After thinking about this a little more, I agree on your point as
well. Since the whole course goes by so fast, in order to get a good time,
the key is being able to assimilate quickly to changes. As a matter of
fact, mixing things up a little [street tires for one event and race for
another] might be beneficial while I'm learning for this reason. It's too
bad that the race tires spoiled me --- I'm don't really feel like running
the street anymore after my car held ground even with such high corner entry
speeds. Unfortunately, my times weren't so great after I butchered the run
by correcting massive oversteer.
The school was very helpful to me, but I still don't know and apply the
concepts "like the back of my hand." It's easy to think about what I did
wrong after a run (sure, I find lots of things) but it's difficult to
actually perfect a run when you're thinking about so many things. Going
forward, I'm going to take just 1-2 things at a time to focus on in a lap
and improve. After I've significantly improved the 1-2 things per lap, I'll
use the final lap to make a decent performance on the whole. I've also come
to learn that much of autocross is about polishing your instincts, speed of
thinking, and of course... looking ahead.
James: My car's feel makes more a lot more sense now that you've explained
it that way. Let's see what I can pull off for the next event. My run
group is after lunch, and if you'll be sticking around then don't hesitate
to find me in the good ol' stealth.

i recall that your understeer problems came from too fast corner entry
coupled with not unwinding the wheel enough on exit. if you put on race
tires and drive at the same speed, suddenly you are not entering the corners
too fast any more. then the throttle will let the car oversteer. race
tires will also transfer more weight to the front under braking, loosening
the rear. AWD tends to act a little funny and ive found i need to be
extremely aggressive with the throttle to make it do anything.
rich is right: max used his M3 for some runs saturday and said there was
always huge understeer when hes driven it. after i drove it, he said hes
never seen it oversteer that much. technique can change what a car does
(easiest in a RWD car), and max started to get the hang of making the big
bimmer more neutral.
your car is very heavy, very powerful, and has AWD. thats a tough
combination, need to be a ballerina dancing on top of a bucking bull. :)
as far as learning on whichever tires, it all doesnt matter much, because
getting good at driving means being comfortable getting into different cars
and making them do what *you* want, not what the car wants.
