Given the constraints of novice class (i.e. no "R" compound tires), I would
look at the following :
Falken Azeni, 205/55R16 (stock size) or 215/45R16 (1" shorter than stock,
slightly wider). Great in the dry, and even works pretty well in the wet.
Kumho Ecsta MX, 225/50R16 (stock diameter)
The Kumho 712, while a decent "street tire", won't stick all that well for
autoX. Of course, it would outstick those RE92s :^)
If you wanna go big bucks and don't care about the (non-existent) wet
performance, then the BFG KD in 205/55R16 or 225/50R16 would work. It
probably will stick about as well as any novice-legal tire for your
application.
