Welcome back. Your accident reminds me of a story I may have told some of
you. I used to race in USCF amateur road races and criteriums. One year at
the Livermore crit, there was this horrific crash I was involved in. It was
in the final turn of the last lap and everyone was jockeying for position. I
was fifth from the front with my teammate right in front of me. We were in
the perfect spot to podium
But as things go in two wheel sports, balance is everything. The guy in
second place touched his front wheel with the guy in first. They both went
down. The guy behind them went down after he rode over the two guys. My
teammate and I went down also. It was a very tangled mess of aluminum, carbon
fiber, helmets, Lycra, steel and flesh. Did I really say Lycra?
Well, after the field passed us up I got up, checked my bike and got ready to
ride off. Funny how we check out equipment before our body. I looked down and
the guy that caused the crash was still laying there wincing and moaning in
pain, holding his chest and shoulder. His cycling helmet was in several
pieces along the street. His bikes wheels were all bent, handlebars
crisscrossed. The course marshall ran over to the the cyclist
Course marshall: "Are you OK?"
Cyclist: "Arghh yeah I think I'm OK.Ahhhh. But I broke my collarbone"
Course marshall: "You broke your collar bone? How the heck do you know that?"
Cyclist: "Ahhhhh. ...Because... it felt like this the last time I broke it"
